EESA06H3 Lecture 10: Lecture 10
Document Summary
Anthropocene: areas completely changed as a result of human activity. Bioturbation: overprinting of original rock textures, structures by organisms that have been burrowing down through rocks, either in search of food or protection and they destroy the original structure. Environmental challenges: urban sprawl: hardening of the landscape. Ex. roads, buildings: managing/protecting water resources; watersheds and ecosystems, wastes (nuclear, municipal, industrial etc); Nuclear waste is being stored at pickering, darlington stations middle of urban areas. Municipal waste we try to recycle some of it, rest is landfilled. Land fill is an old quarry/pit: remediation of contaminated sites; We want to use re-use industrial sites. Large areas of the city being underlain by fill or industry are being used by people to live. So, needs cleaning up, this process is very expensive: radon gas; Radon gas causes cancer: hazards: earthquakes, landslides & tsunamis; mitigation of climate warming effects; Environmental impact of resource extraction and energy supplies; environmental policy and planning.
