To understand earth"s history which provides context for current environmental changes. Note: the subsurface is important to know due to ground water issues; by knowing the geology in three dimensions; layering, what the layer is composed of and how they vary laterally. Uniformitarianism: the theory that changes in the earth"s crust during geological history have resulted from the action of continuous and uniform processes. Know basic anatomy of the planet earth. Lecture two outline and key events leading to plate tectonics: big idea of plate tectonics (proof of a mobile planet as oceans and continents move around the surface of the planet) 30 years ago, this was a theory but now it"s moved to a modern understanding of plate tectonics.
