Rodinia very large superconinent: 570 million years ago breakup of rodinia. Carbonates dominant mineral in sedimentary rocks: also known as limestone. Detrital means broken, made of fragments of other materials: sandstones, etc. Geology in 4 layers: precambrian basement, phanerozoic cover rocks, glacial sediments, built" landscape and historic ill materials. Mariime canada and eastern usa (the appalachian belt: made up of far-travelled displaced crus (terranes) Newfoundland divided into three major parts. Ophiolites: the remains of the iapetus ocean in central newfoundland. Pangea breaks up leaving african crust behind: atlanic ocean opens and the west becomes the acive plate margin, cordilleran orogenies , briish columbia, alaska etc. Ice ages: ice covers 35-40% of northern hemisphere perhaps 50 imes in last 2. 5 million years.
