EESA LEC 9 NOTES: The Future of Planet Earth
Todays lecture:
Future of the earth
A new supercontinent in 200 million years time
Alpine-himalayan orogeny = building process of the next
supercontinent called Pangea 2 using process called Obduction
involcing earthquakes that causes plates to collide
Obduction processes have been important in the last 3 billion yrs, it is
the way we have grown continents
Subduction= destroying crust mostly, obduction = colliding crust
together to create larger land mass
Destruction of the tethys ocean
Climate change = tectonic process can change climates on much longer
timescales, geology of Canada would be much diff. if it werent for the
major orogenic belt; its formation changed global climates and led to
the cooling of the planet of the last 20 million yrs
We wouldnt have had ice ages in Canada or a cold Arctic if it werent
for the uplift of the Himalayan mountain belt = lead to evolution of
human species
(Page 1)
Slide 3:
Earth history is a succession of supercontinents
Looking at the diagram on the slide, the reversal of the cartoon in
135 million yrs in the future, will be the formation of a new
supercontinent (Pangea 2)
Slide 4:
Everything is headed towards South East Asia which will be the locus
of the next supercontinent; where everything is headed
