Document Summary
Uncle joe mckenna = fireman in nyc: 1938 on a day off he went to the firehouse to hangout, he polished all the brass, one of the fire hose nozzle toppled off the shelf and hit him. His shoulder hurt -> fever -> blood poisoning. A lot of people died this way back then. All of this changed when antibiotics were created. We are in the post-antibiotic era; people are dying to the same infections again because of antibiotic resistance. Bacteria are developing resistance a lot faster now (16 years to 1 year) Antibiotics are the way to go anymore. 700,000 worldwide deaths from antibiotic resistance, 50,000 in usa. Loss of antibiotics : protection for people with weak immune systems, cancer, aids, transplant recipients, premature babies, insertion of foreign objects: stents for stroke, pumps for diabetes, dialysis, joint replacements, surgery, fear infections that seemed minors.
