Lecture 11: environmental hazards to specific populations. Infectious agents: eg. pool water in swimming pool has chlorine, participation in certain athletics and/or risky activities. Higher ratio of skin surface area to body weight than adults. Skin is more permeable: gastrointestinal adsorption large surface area of intestines, Prolong gastric emptying time, food stays longer in the gut thus, the absorption is higher. Tinnitus ringing or other sound in the ears after exposure to loud noise. Personal music players: prevalence of hearing loss in us adolescents: 20% in 2005-2006: airport noise associated with impaired reading comprehension and long-term memory, elderly and environmental health, rapidly growing aging population in canada, chronic diseases and disabilities due to poor environmental conditions. Pesticides: war and the environment, nuclear weapon technology (radioactivity, testing and use, aerial bombing. Production of toxic gases, and dust: land mines. Unexploded mines -reduce communication and movement of people, cleanup of unexploded mines. Disrupt soil and water processes: chemical war.
