Lec 6
Radiation and Human Health:
Long time ago pple too were exposed to radiation because of natural radiation. We cannot
control this background radiation but we can tolerate it.
Man-made radiation comes from almost every man made electronic product.good thing- we
can control this type of radiation and try to reduce it as much as possible.
Radon biggest potion of radiation. Its radio active gass can come out from water/shower
All radiation, 2 groups IONIZED AND NON_IONIZED
IONIZED- high energy and short wavelength-can break chemical bonds, damage DNA,
strip electrons from atoms
NoN-IONIZED we now worry about it recently like microwaves, tv waves, cell phones esp.
Coz we dont know the long time effects.
IONIZED RADIATION: look at slide: alpha beta and gamma rays are diff and have diff
energies.
Stohastic health effects: chronic effects due to radiation over a long period of time cannot
detect in the first years. Increase in dose of radiation will not change the type of illness-
same type, same symptoms and same severity but will only effect the likelyhood how much
probable it is for a person to get it.
Mutations types *read abt tht*- genetic mutation and smthin else..
Non-stochastic-high levels cause radiation sickness or poisoning like skin burns loss of hair
etc)-most medical patients get it they also face premature aging.
Nuclear power accidents:
Pennslvannia: not enough proof that it caused any severe problem
Chernobyl: additional problem the wind from Ukraine it blew direct to Europe like Sweden
Norway, Denmarknorthern Europe so these pple were effected by it. Increasing thyroid
problems in children in 10 yrs who were exposed to it when they were 4 yrs old. They also
face defects malnutrition etc.
Chernobyl released increased very high levels of radiation!!
Some organs are more sensitive to radiation thn others.

Leah — University of Toronto

OneClass has been such a huge help in my studies at UofT especially since I am a transfer student. OneClass is the study buddy I never had before and definitely gives me the extra push to get from a B to an A!

Balancing social life With academics can be difficult, that is why I'm so glad that OneClass is out there where I can find the top notes for all of my classes. Now I can be the all-star student I want to be.

Saarim — University of Michigan
Jenna — University of Wisconsin

As a college student living on a college budget, I love how easy it is to earn gift cards just by submitting my notes.
