Organic chemicals are better soluble in fats, less soluble in water. Heavy metals better soluble in water, less in fats. If chemical is fat soluble then easier for them to enter and penetrate cell wall. Some are too big to enter microbial cells, too large to be broken down. Organic, higher molecular weight chemicals are more lipophilic and more persistent. Toxicology science of the effects of toxic substances and of their fate and transport in the body. Skin is our human envelop that separates inside of body from the outside of the body. Because of age response could be completely different even for people with similar genetic makeup in same family (some illness more impact on elderly, some more impact on children). General health also a factor, since current health could lead to being more/less sensitive to the chemical.
