Sources: major source is motor vehicles, house fires, furnaces/heaters, wood burning stoves, propane- fuelled equipment like portable camping stoves. Health impact: co binds to the hemoglobin in blood and this decreases the oxygen carrying capacity of blood, inhibiting transport, delivery, and utilization of oxygen. Oxygen is not delivered to the tissues and this causes tissue hypoxic injury. It can also cause brain damage or death from anoxia (collapsing without awareness). Therefore, central nervous system and heart impacted largely. Emission controls: promoting less-polluting forms of transportation and energy, induce drivers to use lubricants correctly maintaing vehicles regularly, switch to less-polluting four-stroke engines, ozone: sources, health impact and reduction strategies. Ozone: a major component of photochemical smog formed from nox, vocs, and o in the presence of sunlight and heat. Sources: motor vehicles generate nox and vocs.
