Document Summary

Radiation and human health: we cannot escape radiation, there are 2 cases of radiation, background radiation: natural radioactivity in the earth and by cosmic rays from outer space. It comes from the soil or the cosmic rays: manmade radiation: comes from electronic products such as mircowaves, x-ray machines, tvs etc. Background and manmade radiation: most radiation comes from the radon gas in the ground, from arti cial sources, most radiation comes form medical sources, not all radiation is equally damaging to human health. They all have different natures: there are 2 large groups of factions: ionized radiation (high energy w short wavelengths) and non-ionized radiation (low energy w long wavelengths) Ionized radiation: radioactive material that decay spontaneously produce ionizing radiation, strip away electrons from atoms (create two charged ions). This makes them more dangerous: because they have high energy they can break chemical bonds, alpha, beta particles, gamma and x-rays (differ in the amount of energy they have).
