English- Lecture Four 11-04-10 2:44 PM
- We only know the world through words
- Myths of Origin- myths that suggest how we began; disappears and then
we begin it ourselves
- “God spoke the word, and the world was then formed”- old testament
- if you change the word, you change the world
- we believe perception is the world
William blacke, the eye altering, alters all
- cannot stop racism because it works too well
- myths of progress- roads…take you to a predestined place
- myth of origin- we go back to it to rationalize a bad decision
what kills Dorian Gray is his myth of origin
- if you give someone their myth of origin, that means you control them.
- “when you influence someone, you give them their soul- Henry (novel-
Dorian Gray).
- Myths of origin become our future, in our beginning is our end. We can
interrogate our beginning; self is a myth and has the capacity to pave our
future, and can even get us fast.
- When doing a myth of origin, the toughest part to come up with is why
there is suffering, death and cruelty? Not hard to come up with myths on
why people are good, why life is great.
- Challenge of myths- Death, suffering, why we do things that we regret,
what happened?
- The fall in Adam and Eves story- they were told not to eat from the tree of
knowledge; and that there is a snake (Satan) in the garden. Eve was far
away from Adam in the other end of the garden, snake came up to her and
started talking to her and said why dont you eat the apple. Eve says, god
said dont and snake says so what who is he (god). He doesnt want you to
eat it because that’s the secret of how he controls you.
- Satan is great spin doctor in our world, snake spins it and says you are
being controlled by god, and you can pull the plug in this make-believe world
and become God’. Makes sense to Eve and takes a bite, tells Adam and says

let me have one, but I cant believe that. Maybe Adam eating the apple for
Eve, could’ve been one of the greatest signs of love, world. Sent angel
Michael and told him to kick out Adam and Eve for committing this “sin”.
They discover that they were naked, and didnt discover it before because
there was no such thing as nakedness in that Garden. They then felt
“shame- worried how that behavior could lead to their shame. They then
put on their clothes and left the garden of Eden. Why lie in the garden of
Eden when everything is there because everyone has everything and no one
could be BAD before the fall.
-Self conscious is constantly wondering if you are good and bad, and
wondering what the consequences of one or the other might be. There was
no free will before Adam and Eve, they didnt know about it until they chose
something that has consequences. Free will is suffering consequences and
realizing that you made a choice, then you are aware of the concept of
choice.
- Almost every choice we make is one or the other, we are driven by our
vulnerability. We need to understand the make up of our vulnerability, or
else we will sure ourselves up with the wrong thing. The more you get, the
less it helps, the more you need, the more dependent you become. When we
engage our vulnerability, it becomes a ritual. Dorian gray turns around from
that fake full moment, wishing the picture turns old and gray not his physical
stature.
- Marlow comes back shattered. Kurtz dies and ahs to let go of the idea that
western culture is the light being brought to Congo.
Heart of darkness is not Congo, its Kurtz.
- Dorian gray “theres a heaven and hell in each of us” hell- us getting old,
and heaven- is us wanting to be good”. Hell is crucial part of who we are,
heaven is what u get when you deal with your hell- basically a result for
dealing with your hell.
- Kurtz wants to be all heaven because he does wonderful things for them in
Congo, when he finds hes exterminating them he cant turn back; his

campaign to be all heaven and not hell, causes him grief and he begins to
eliminate them.
- Myths of origin can be helpful, useful and positive in one point of your life
and can be undermining, destructful in other part of your life. We always
have our insecurities and authenticity is a balancing act. None of us are
purely what we want to be. Ex. Degree- universities have a monopoly in
terms of degree. Monopolys are never good, because you stop getting
better. When you feel negative, exterminate the beasts.
- Marlow is not a saint but shady and goes to Congo because he cant get a
job, loser in todays terminology. But he has capacity to adjust his myths of
origin when he encounters the realities that impose them.
- One way to think of heart of darkness is what happens when something
encounters you? Encounter, exchange and circulate- way of life that we
naturally do. We are anxious for encounters and love to have an exchange
and then we circulate to find that way to gain this encounter.
* think of it through the nine encounters.
*The Nine Key Encounters of Marlowe in Heart of Darkness*
Encounter 1- The old ladies Knitting (greek myth of origin, that these three
ladies knit and when they snip your yarn, that’s it. The destinys that they
have are formed for you.
Ancient myth vs. Modern Medicine
Yesterday’s facts are today’s myths
Encoutner 2- Being checked by the doctor- changes take place inside is the
theme of this book, and if you measure things that dont matter and what
you claim it indicates in in-connected.
Encounter 3- myth of efficiency frequently makes us not stop because we
are on our way to somewhere else. We dont stop and encounter what
might’ve made a difference. We always announce encounters to get through
them, every encounter is on the way on where we are going. Myth of origin
can be very efficient. Dorian Gray if afraid of encounters. “We are the effects
of our encounters”- our self can only know itself by encountering others.
