The older notion that we have an essence that drives and informs our existence has been flipped around: we exist, and, from this inescapable fact, we construct, retrospectively, a belief in an essence that precedes this existence. But it is only our existence that serves as the basis for doing this. Knowledge/power= time out /treat: punishment/reward: interfering with, interacting with desire. This is a cure the success of which reinforces the original description of human beings in # 1. Patients exhibiting the disease are seen in the same ward. A specialist devotes more training to the specific disease: the disease, not the person, becomes the signifying entity exhibiting the symptoms. There is no time or procedure for interacting with their own experience which becomes incidental: emphasis shifts from what the patient can communicate to what the doctor can observe. New forms of viewing the body proliferate: x-rays bone scans cat scans sonograms ultrasounds.
