ENGB03H3 Lecture : Lecture One
Document Summary
Porter abbott: simply put, narrative is the representation of an event or series of events. Example: my dog has fleas is a description of my dog, however my dog was bitten by a flea is a narrative. E. m. forster: the king died and then the queen died is a story, the king died and then the queen died of grief is a plot (one event produces another event) John le carre: the cat sat on the mat is not the beginning of a story, but the cat sat on the dogs mat is a beginning of a story because conflict and dynamic is added. James phelan: narrative can be fruitfully understood as a rhetorical. On some occasion (there is a context for the narration) Examples of non- narratives are charts, stats, recipes, etc. But most of our communications contain some degree of narratives. In the room the women come and go talking of michael angelo. (medium)
