ENGB04H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Denise Levertov, Free Verse, Enjambment
Document Summary
I believe every space and comma is a living part of the poem and has its function, just as every muscle and pore of the body has its function. And the way the lines are broken is a functioning part esse(cid:374)tial to the poe(cid:373)(cid:859)s life. Short response paper (2 pages double-spaced; due in tutorial february 10) Analyse one of the following poems: (cid:862)au(cid:271)ade(cid:863) (cid:271)y philip larki(cid:374) o (cid:862)the oad not take(cid:374)(cid:863) (cid:271)y o(cid:271)ert frost. Rhythm or metre affect the feel of the poem. Poetry has lines, as well as sentences -> breath and rhythm matter as much as syntax does. The first word is usually capitalized, even when it is not the first word in the sentence. The last word stands out visually and usually aurally (you can hear it) A pattern of regular line lengths creates expectations and notions or order (and of challenges or disruptions to that order) A kite is a victim you are sure of.
