3 handles that we should think about Frost as:
1. Modernist Frost
Interested in active poetry; he wanted poetry that would be accessible for
everyone
Because he is coming from a politically and poetically revolutionary time period,
the poetry seems to be easy to read on the surface but contains deep meanings

Complex ideas expressed but readable and attainable for everyone

Discussion Questions: on The Wood-Pile and Out, Out

The Wood Pile is more focused on imagery and paints a vivid mental picture.
o He refers to luerjak
Out, Out is ore soud ased, repetitio i harsh souds.
o End dashes for accidents
o Emphasis on child tragically dying from labour death, cut arm off

Speaker and Context:
Both poems use first person in different degree.
o Woodpile is lone wanderer in frozen swamp, more personal , slow and soft
He is observant, appreciates nature, hard work, detailed oriented
He is thoughtful, and melancholic
o Out-Out uses more sounds, enjambment, thrilling and rough
Woodpile uses I throughout the poe
o You immediately know who is talking
o Focuses on internal emotional experience
Out-Out oly uses I oe, they put you ito the story ut do’t tell you ho the speaker is
o Shows that speaker is just observing and not experiencing the action
Speech act is different in both poems
o Woodpile is description
o Out-Out is dialogue
Both poems take place in time period where people cut wood a lot.
o Agricultural setting, pre-industrialization
