Place and space play an important role in this novel. The space that they embody, the general area. Political issues are specifically address, but place and space discuss class. Difference in what you can do in private or public. Elinor is always telling marianne to tone down the dramatics. Those of upper class have a higher space. Summer and winter houses, city and country homes. Importance of interiors and interior spaces even when moved to a different city. Most of the action happens inside a house. Women are in the interior, men are exterior. Since large majority of characters are women, it happens inside - female space. Norland - first sentence of the novel has to do with setting. They"ve lived here for a very long time, it"s a large house and people like them. Gives you a description of the place and those who inhabit it. In relation to what they had previously, this is very small.
