CONT. OF LAST LECTURE
- Ahilleus’ reitegratio aog other hua eigs
o Sympathetic connection between Achilleus and Priam (24.486-512)
Person that allows Achilleus to reintegrate back with humans is the father of
Hektor: Priam
Creates a parallel etee Ahilleus’s father ad hiself
Ahilleus, ho’s father is aset, ad Pria, ho’s so is dead for a
connection and this is how Priam pulls him back into humanity
o Ahilleus’ reogitio of oo huaity .-533)
Realises that all humans are all connected through the fate of being human.
They all have to suffer.
o Ahilleus takes o Pria’s perspetie .ff
“ees ho it ust e for Pria to go fro the ealthiest Kig, to a a ho’s
country is in jeopardy and has lost all of his sons
Seems to be empathizing
Contrast with 22.346-348
In great contrast to Achilleus in the past who was so self-absorbed and
unable to see anything outside of his grief for Patroklos
- Fragility of sympathetic relationship (24.560ff; 24.581ff)
o In this moment has verbally agreed to return the body to Priam
o Priam tells him that since Achilles has treated him well, he will do the same for him.
Priam wants Achilles to return to his home with the ransom that Priam had offered.
o In response to this, Achilles responds in a very hostile way
o He feels as though he is acting with two forces, one which wishes to do the right thing
and obey the gods, but another that feels that Priam could harm him once he does.
He responds in a very hostile way because he knows that once he has killed
Hektor, he would not be able to return back to the land of his fathers (as Priam
had suggested)
o Achilles is scared that once Priam sees the body of Hektor, he will react violently.
However, he controls this emotion
- Achilleus helps Priam
o Escape the detection of Agamemnon (24.650ff)
Described as sarcastic as there is irony in the situation. He is helping to protect
the supposed enemy of his comrade Agamemnon.
He knows that there is incongruity in the situation, but still continues to act in a
very honourable and generous way to Priam
o Gain time for proper burial rites for Hektor (24.660ff)
Before he was acting rashly on his negative emotions and was intent on harming
the body as much as possible, not he is acting on his nobler emotions and
wishes to give the body a proper burial. He is very humane this time.
He promises to hold off the fighting in order to hold the burial.

The End of The Iliad
- It eds i the iddle of eets Hektor’s urial ad starts i the iddle.
- Troy not yet fallen
o Death of Achilleus; Trojan horse; the sack of Troy all still events in the future
- “igifiae of the poe’s fial fous eig Hektor rather tha Ahilleus?
o POSSIBLE REASONS WHY (THERE REALLY IS NO RIGHT ANSWER)
o It is already known that Ahilleus’s death relies o the death of Hektor therefore, there
is o reaso to fous o Ahilleus’s death
o The Iliad is foused priarily o Ahilleus’s ager. Ahilleus’s rage has urt out y the
ed, the retur of Hektor’s ody as the ed of Ahilleus’s anger, therefore that is the
end of The Iliad.
o This ending shows the positive human side of these warriors.
Hele’s speeh to Hektor at the urial . 
Hektor was always gentle and kind to Helen, despite him being a fierce warrior
Hektor is very compassionate
The Iliad eds o Hektor’s urial ad Ahilleus fially returig the ody ad
helpig Hektor’s father, eause it is here that they display the ost huaity
that could possibly be expected from warriors.
The physial redeptio of Hektor’s ody brings about the moral redemption of
Achilleus.
It shows something worth celebrating in these warriors in the midst of war.
