ENGB32H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Double Rose, Ninety-Five Theses, Alliteration
Document Summary
A lot of english theatre originated with religious plays (due to the power of the clergy); they were called. Was used to educate the illiterate populace on the bible. This promise of resurrection showed to the audience that those who followed the angel says to the three marys at the tomb of jesus; shows the promise of resurrection commandments of god will be rewarded with eternal life. In 1210 the pope bans the clergy from acting on stage - the guilds take over the plays to make pageant wagons. Each wagon would have different guild in charge of making the stage and acting it out; for example, the carpenters would recreate noah"s ark (because they worked with wood) Miracle plays - all such plays were banned under henry the 8th. Did not want any religious plays on stage that could threaten protestantism.
