ENGB32H3 Lecture 11: 11.0 Hamlet Part 1
Document Summary
The idea of being" is a very loaded concept - you be, therefore you exist; to choose not to be is also extremely loaded. Hamlet is a character that thinks and reflects too much (hamlet himself says so) Stoic view: he is a soul completely apart from his actions; being and doing are seperate. Existential view: philosophy that you are nothing but your actions; to be is to do and to do is to be. Hamlet and the skull: one of the most iconic shakespearean images. Hamlet (a very reflective and thoughtful man) vs. a total annihilation of consciousness (i. e skull) Hamlet is a radical thinker, but confronts the radical lack of life in the skull. The body in a grave disintegrates, but it is also believed that at the last judgement the bodies will rise again perfected" - judgement is physical and spiritual.
