ENGB03: Lecture 7 Topics: ­Meeting characters ­The heroes and villains of Middlemarch ­The real deal: Mary Garth ­there are no good and bad guys in Middlemarch ­very humanizing to not make the characters black and white  ­assessing a character “lifelike” ­“simple” characterization – by shorthand, by epigram, by metaphor and metonymy – also serves a  purpose. Example, of metonymy, I do not speak that tongue. ­Rosemond, stubborn, always gets what she wants – she’s stiff­necked ­Mr.Raffles – too familiar for first meeting ­Mr.Causabon – uses I a lot, references being old, think  highly
