Conversation between self and primary text (loving/hating, engagement, etc. ) Conversation with other critics who are interested in that same text. Things people have said about source = secondary text. Literary studies is an evidence-based studies, like science. Feelings and opinions not grounded in text should not be included. Close reading: read text and not thinking about what it means, but focused on how it achieves that meaning. Re-read, read poems aloud numerous times: re-reading texts can help with jarring/uncomfortable moments. Usually important: look up what you don"t know. Look up words that you think you know, just to make sure you know what they mean: be able to identify what you have in front of you. Be able to identify the different forms (i. e. forms of poetry: get comfortable with annotating text.
