To become a good literary critic, need to learn to read closely and become a good reader. Scansion: method of reading a line of a poem whilst looking for rhyme, rhythm and meter. Feet = 2 beats. unstressed, followed by stressed = iambic. Forces you down to slow down stressed, 2 unstressed = dactyl. Enjambment: when the line spills over to the next line (->) End-stopped: end of meaning or thought coincides with the end of the line (ll) Intimate dark space of the bedroom is always interrupted. Starts of pleasant for speaker and lover word "nice" is repeated 10 times throughout the poem. If we trace the use of "nice" throughout the poem, start to see irony at play. One of meanings for "nice" is the distance between the woman and lover.
