Broken blossom (1919) tells the story of two individuals, both living in troubled times and what happens as a result of them coming to know one another. Cheng huan is a buddhist monk who travelled to london to spread his religion, and lucy, portrayed by lillian gish, is a young girl from a troubled home she shares with an abusive father. Lucy is a character that we come to sympathize with throughout the movie and begin to hope finds a better, safer life away from her father. A sense of her terrible life built with the intense scenes she shares with her father, and the her expressions when she makes a mistake and hurriedly tries to correct herself. In this shot, lucy has locked herself in the closet to protect herself from her father s wrath, but only manages to further infuriate her father who then starts to break down the door to get her.
