Bible and Literature II
John
John's book is based on “favourite disciple” - John is supposedly the favourite disciple
This is the one place where you see the personalities of disciples developed
The writer of John is not to keen on Peter, but John is the one who Jesus sees as the most
important disciple
Written about 70 years after Jesus' death
Group in Jerusalem who were followers of John
This is a lot different than the other books
Gospel of John: Another Kind of Jesus
In John, Jesus is an incarnation of divine wisdom and the word incarnate is “to make flesh”
Human form of God's Holy World
For John, his existence is eternal – pre-human and after-human existence
He's in the form of the Holy Spirit
Gospel of John is much more philosophical – it starts off completely different
Chapter 1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God...
And the Word was made flesh...
Reference to the dual covenants: the one with Moses and the one with Jesus
Differences
Only brief allusions to the 2nd coming (no prophecies)
Concerned with establishing brother and sisterhood
The risen Christ is eternally present (or present in a surrogate) in the invisible Holy Spirit
When Christ rises, if you are a believer and follower of Christ, this spirit is alive in you
In John behaviour is acknowledged, but it's not so important – what's important is
receiving this Holy Spirit
*Escatology?
Here is where the origins of “The Trinity” - idea of a tripartite God
The Greek word is Paraclete which also translated as Comforter, Helper, Advocate or Spirit of
Truth.
Crucifixion not a terrible ordeal but a glorious affirmation of the prophecies and a return to
God
In this crucifixion Jesus has more control
It's difficult/painful but he has no objections
Depiction of Jesus being perfect – unlike the Matthew Jesus he has no doubts & cannot be
tempted.
Being ascended on the cross is like going back to a word that he already knows – it's a
different experience than that in the other gospels
In the other gospels he teaches in parables and demands that they interpret what he's saying
He doesn't disclose who he is or anything
