Lec 4 y Red sea is embryonic ocean brand new 20 million years old Continues to widen Will grow to mature individual wide ocean like Atlantic y Mid ocean comes up above sea level y Walk over mid ocean ridge and see what is happening in Iceland y Next week we look at how oceans close y Oceans rift through younger oceans and get a certain size and start to close because What happens to the floor of ocean crust or on the margins It begins to subducty As you move away from mid ocean ridge the thickness of the ocean crust increases because the oceanic crust is cooling away from the ridge and so it thickens Cooling and thickens as you go away from ridge on either sidey What happens when you have thick heavy rock sitting on the mantle below Thick slab of oceanic crust sitting It wants to sink back down into the mantle y Oceans are shallower along centerline and crust thickens begins to subducty In earth history like an accordion it opens and closes y Earth history is really controlled by ocean history Dictated by what the oceans are doing New ocean forming is pushing land apart Oceans get wide and close Like an accordion something that opens and closes y History of continent is dictated by history of the ocean Earth history is controlled by ocean history y We will look at modern mid ocean ridge y Oceans close and floors get pushed up on land y We call those ancient pieces of ocean crust opheolitesy They are important because by combining info from ancient opheolites we can figure out what happens at mid oceanic ridge y Floors get pushed up on land y Opheolites are economically important because they contain rocks rich in minerals so we are dependent on ancient ocean crust Mineral rich rocks y Eukaliopeseukal mountain and aloipe leap Floods they get in Iceland y Water coming out of mountain as ice melts and theres eruption and ice melts Heavy rain Canyon fills up with watery Using hot water to generate hydro to heat buildings geothermal activity y Atlantic has a spine that runs up called mid ocean ridge They are underwater volcanoes that are active all the timey Pushing NA and European plate aparty Cracks running along ridges called fractures They have special role They enable ocean floor spreading on the curved surface of the earthy Mid ocean ridge are not continuous They have cracks running along ridge called fractures They enable ocean floor spreading on a curved surface of the earthy Orange stripes through rocks called dykes or dikes They are result of hot magma intruding into older rock along fractures
