Lecture 8: Measuring Wind Instrumentation Wind direction o Wind vane or weather vane o Location is very important for placement of weather vane Wind speed o Anemometer Upper level (above surface) o Drift of radiosonde o Deduced from pressure measurements o If know change in pressure in altitude, can calculate this Anemometers Deflection o First anemometer o Alberti used a spring attached to a clip, which moves when there is wind o Not good for light wind o Da Vinci made another one which was good for light wind o Hooke expanded Da Vincis design Pressure o Lind, when wind pushes the liquid- speed reflected in pressure Cup o Robinson, 1846 o First one was 4 cups and later converted to 3 cups Windmill o Uses
