Endocrine disruptors also bind to hormone receptors and alter gene functions o Indirectlyconsequent effects of the disruptors: altered hormone productiontransportmetabolism - Fetuses are more sensitivesusceptible to endocrine disruptors than adults o Thyroid hormone affects mental brain development in fetuses Slide: DES - Synthetic estrogen used to prevent spontaneous abortion (1948-1971) o Taken by more than 1 million women from 1960 to 1970 - Daughters whose mothers took DES had increased incidents of: reproductive organ dysfunction, abnormal pregnancies, reduction in fertility, immune system disorders o After seeing the horrible results that the daughters of those who took DES had to face, use was discontinued Slide: Endocrine Disruptors: Health Implications
