Age of discovery - 16th to 17th century: ** Reinforced the idea of a diverse, but balanced creation. Divine agency were seen as operating through secondary causes (glacken 1967). Populations of animals are not held by preordained numbers by god, thus they will continue to increase along with their food supply. Francis bacon wished to insaturate or reinvigorate science in response the dominant scholastic school of thought. He wished to discourage the dogmatic anticipation of natural explanation. He wanted to expose the limitations of human thought. Dogmatics: the action of wishing to make principles always true, by speaking of opinions as though they are facts. He wrote a book titled, the new atlantis in order to establish science as the basis for his utopian ambitions. The cornerstone of his ideal society was a scientific college (salomon"s house) instituted for the interpretation of nature, and for producing marvelous works for the benefit of man.
