The body is a crucial site of socio spatial relations. The (recent) history of the body in geography. Tuan and the humanistic geographers of the 70"s are credited with beginning to bring the body into geography. They were strongly influenced by phenomenology: a philosophical tradition which argued that all understand of the word is limited by or only exists through the apparatus of our senses. Critiques of the humanist approach argue that they relied on the idea of a universal and undifferentiated (white, male) body. Today our ideas about the body in geography still make room for experience", but it experience" complicated by subjectivity, social location, identity and power. Social geographers are weary of biological explanations because these have a history of reinforcing social categories and claimgin they are natural" and therefore unquestionable.
