LECTURE 11 – GEOGRAPHIES OF MENTAL ILLNESS AND ADDICTION Global Situation  1 in 4 will experience a mental illness  154 million suffer from depression  1 in 100 are affected by schizophrenia  Psychiatric disability are 2/5 of all disabilities worldwide Mental Health & Illness  Mental health  Environment we live plays a big role as far as mental health’s concerned  In line with Holistic model (in WHO definition –that all these things connect)  Mental illness/disorder o Refers to a recognized, medically diagnosable illness that results in significant impairment of an individuals’ cognitive, affective or relational abilities  Biomedical approach to health  Affective: how you express things – the affective ability (you smile that’s an affect) some mental illness will cause people to lose their ability to show an affect  Diagnosed by DSM-IV  Definitions  Clinical Depression o Physical thing o Biological impairment there – body doesn’t make right chemicals in right level  Bi-polar (Manic Depression) o Called manic – because you have two polars in your feeling, sometimes you’ll suffer from depression and then sometimes you’ll suffer from mania (recklessness)  Schizophrenia o Psychotic disorder o People with this have issues affecting their ability to connect with reality  Anxiety Disorders o Pattern of frequent or constant worry for no reason o OCD is a part of that disorder = irrational connection o They’re interchangeable, you can have 2 together Mental Health In Canada  Known as the orphan child  Doesn’t get any money in Canada  Asylums – lack of control for the patient – so
