The global economic system consists of a single spatial division of labour, within which cities have specialized roles. Hypothesized that cities at the top of the hierarchy are the locations of the global economic control functions. Activities take place in: residences, workplaces, shopping districts, recreation areas, transportation corridors. Cities require infrastructure to help them work, link the different pieces. It is integrated food, goods, services, money. Proposed a global hierarchy of world cities, with london, new york and tokyo at the top. Many people tried to develop data to measure world city rankings later this was found to be true. Cities articulate local economies to the global economy.
