Document Summary

Lec 08: march 1, 2016 urban ecology, urban political ecology, water. Key concept 1: the idea of studying cities as ecosystems gave rise to urban ecology. Cities are a special kind of ecosystem, created by people. Cities have inputs and outputs, structured by metabolic processes of production, delivery, consumption, and waste emission. Not an empty space, but provide distinctive ecological niches and habitats that support complex and city-specific plant and animal systems. Urban monoculture ecosystems can be ideal breeding grounds for disease vectors. New way of understanding and seeing cities and urban processes. Ecology: the study of the relations of living organisms to each other and to their surroundings. Ecology studies flows within particular ecosystems, of nutrients, energy, waste and the subsystems that structure those flows. Lots of research still to do ion what kinds of ecosystem cities are. In past 15 years, new understandings of cities as complex ecosystems have developed.
