1. Degradation & Marginalization
• (degradation = reducing in quality)
• Poverty has long been seen to lead to overexploitation of natural
resources
• Overexploitation of resources has in turn been seen to lead to poverty
• Vicious cycle
• Poverty —> overexploitation & vice versa
• Rather than simply blaming marginalized ppl, PE seeks to show
environmental degradation in larger political & economic context

2. Conservation & Control
• In the name of conservation & “sustainability”, control of natural
resources been taken away from local ppl/users/producers
• Local ppl have perception that ppl taking away control are above
them
• Perceived to have power
• But many conservation efforts known to be harmful to ppl & nature
• Some efforts have even failed in some cases
• Conservation can be bad
• i.e. restricting animals, plants, ppl, etc. (zoos, gardens, etc.)
• Don’t interfere w/ balance of nature
3. Environmental Conflict & Exclusion
• Resource enclosure or appropriation of natural resources by state,
private sector, elites, etc., result in increased scarcity of resources
• Forest/wildlife enclosures —> translates to wealth, reps business
opportunities & $
• ^ inconsiderate of ppl
• Impacts ppl native to land
