GGRC24H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Counterpoint, Temperate Climate, Traditional Ecological Knowledge
Document Summary
The true north is an empty page onto which can be projected images of the essence of canadian-ness and also images to define one"s urban existence against. The north is not singular, nor natural, but rather is comprised of multiple social actors and multiple social processes. Words, sounds, images, signs, and symbols of a northern mentality. Gould"s north is, in fact, contrapuntal and multiple, just as are the voices that we hear. These refuse absolutely to be reduced or distilled to a single vision, a unifying idea, or a master narrative, despite the apparently privileged voice of one of the speakers. The north is a construction of southerners to distinguish us from those who are more southern (grace). People in the south are the authoritative speakers. The north serves the interests of southerners and has a purpose. It"s the mental attitude of the south that makes the north hostile.
