Lecture Notes  Race and nature o How discourses, narratives and explorations of discovery get rationalized in certain ways o Question is how very dominant narratives get prescribed to certain practices o The ways in which nature, non humans and primates get enrolled in nature o Do definitions of race and racialized identities rely on notions of nature and claims to nature?  Authors piece is about the ways in which different types of nature get enrolled – humans, non humans etc. o Is there a relationship between science and race?  Donna Haraway o Traffic between nature and culture o Gender discourse o One hand she points out to all the different ways in which humanistic attributes (speech, intelligence) get projected onto primates – we project our own humanness into primates o We aren’t understanding gorillas and primates on their own terms but rather on our own o There is a boundary between nature and culture but we also proceed it o The second thing is the ways in which distinct social systems become legitimized through reference to primatology – notions of race, notions of gender, sexuality fundamentally often rely on objective scientific studies on how gorillas and primates became o If we assume that these attributes are objective and true then we can rely on notions and studies of nature to justify our own systems – for example we can justify heterosexuality through assuming that these things are true in the non human world – we can also then understand questions race through relationships of so called equivalents constructed through humans and non humans (other author’s argument) o Justifying different social systems – the very things that we project are objective and true and then we can rely on them to justify things like race  Nature and race 1: fluid or fact? o Saying something is natural means to naturalize something and saying other things are not natural o An ideal example of this is heterosexuality o M piece trying to think through how science constructs race and how it renders some people as natural while others not o Another thing is getting us to think about the ways in which the fact of blackness or any identity based on ones appearance is said to be natural –how is it that race becomes a fact? How does whiteness become universalized? How does it go unmarked? o Think about unpacking the ways in which race gets associated with nature o She is getting us to think about the ways in which the diversity of racialized identities become a fact and become solidified  Race and nature 1: scientific racism o
