Sayings of confucius, the taoteching, sayings of zen. Collection of proverbs, gained wide popularity in the state of kerala. The topic of niti used to be an integral part of their curriculum in olden day. The idea was to guide children in the proper direction at an impressionable age. 3 on education, 1 on marriage, 1 on fate. Expands our view of proverbs to the world. Confucius 551-479 bce, aimed to modify society, decrease bad conduct and increase good conduct (li), promote harmony. Emphases: ren : good conduct, benevolence, harmony, fitting in with society, xing ( ): human nature, an inborn quality that can be improved upon, tian-ming( ): fate, heaven"s mandate, xiao: filial piety. Lao-tzu"s taoteching(daodejing) is the book of the tao and the te(de) The tao, is literally road or way . It is the source and ideal of all existence: it is unseen, powerful, the root of all things. The te is the means of reaching tao.
