Marxism:
class conflict between haves and have-nots, between bourgeois and proliterian (working
class)
leads to communism
end exploitation of one class over another
capitalism has to happen to gain wealth
revolution has to happen (change by force)
industrialization has to occur
RSDLP:
Russian Social Democratic Labour Party Marxists party
Believed in Marx’s policies
Leader, Plekhanov (1880-1890) formulated the platform of the Russian Marxists based on
the economic history laid by Marx
He guided the party on a “let’s wait and see” strategy
He wanted to gain wealth and aggravate mass porverty
1903, the Social Democrats split (met for the second time in Brussels)
They discussed whether Marxism should be used
They split in Bolshevik (majority) and Menshevik (minority)
Bolsheviks decided that they would change the course of Marxism in Russia
Mensheviks were more conservative, Christianity who wanted to wait for capitalism whereas
Bolsheviks wanted a revolution
Leader of Bolsheviks was Lenin (Leninism)
Leninism was an adaptation of Marxism
He said that Marx and Engels were looking at British society, an industrial economy, and
they didn’t talk about Russia
So it would be ok to reinterpret the theory for Russia
Leninism:
oRussia is ripe for revolution because of the condition in the country such as poverty,
corruption etc (Mensheviks wanted to wait for capitalism)
oEven though Russia was the weakest link because it was the least industrialized
oOnce power is taken by a conspiracy, it will be protected until there was a
democratization of the revolution. He called it the Vangard of elite. He said that it
would not be a mass revolution, but a coup.
oDictatorship until Europe has their own revolution. Marx predicted that revolution
would happen in Britain and Germany (the most revolutionized). When they establish
their own government, Britain, Germany and Russia will help each other.
oLenin’s plan was that he would take power of Russia, and hold it until the revolution
in UK and Germany
oHe notices that tension between UK and Germany is growing, benefitting Russia
because competition will lead to war
oIt was not predicted that government would be overthrown by the people
