Document Summary

Haitian revolution was a successful slave revolt. Why was julien"s last name raimond while his father"s was raymond : change his name because it was no longer allowed for someone of mixed descent to have a european name. African-european; french-european: free person of color, was very wealthy; large plantation with many slaves. In 1726, there was a norm for social whiteness : if someone was of african-european and french-european, they were white and sat up top of the social hierarchy, they would enjoy white privileges. Slavery and freedom: people who advocated for abolition wanted gradual emancipation to teach the slave how to (independently) take care of themselves. Race and rights: race is formulated in the sciences. One of the great contradictions of late-18th century. New articulations of inclusion: creation of new ideas of universal rights, cosmopolitanism, and equality. Also the new articulation of exclusion: creation of new ideas to justify excluding some people from these universal rights, etc.
