A gene mutation is a mutation that occurs within one gene; the change in dna sequence is only seen within the one gene. Chromosome mutations can affect large portions of a chromosome, entire chromosomes or even entire sets of chromosomes. Before we discuss chromosome mutations it is important that we have an idea of how chromosomes and chromosome regions are identified. So, we will spend a few minutes considering karyotype analysis. We have seen that chromosomes are compact and visible during the m phase. A karyotype is the orderly presentation of the m phase chromosomes for which each particular chromosome has been identified. M phase chromosomes (usually mitotic) are used for karyotype analysis. At metaphase each chromosome is condensed and has an obvious shape and length.
