Document Summary

Bioc15 class 14 october 27, 2017 copyright hasenkampf 2017. Out topic is chromosome rearrangements and we will now look at the last category- translocations. Translocations occur when a broken piece of one chromosome is attached to a different chromosome. The most common type of recovered translocations are reciprocal translocations. Reciprocal translocations occur as a result of two non-homologous chromosomes each breaking, and then rejoining in two new combinations. Figure 9. 2d (2nd edition), figure 9. 20 1st can edition, us ed 13. 18. Reciprocal translocations can give rise to new chromosome shapes, and to new linkage groups. Translocation homozygotes would be rare, but if found they have new linkage groups, because now genes from two different chromosomes are on the same chromosome. In our example, figure 9. 2d (2nd edition), figure 9. 20 1st can edition, us ed 13. 18. originally a, b, c , d , were in the same linkage group, and the loci efghij were in different linkage groups.
