HISC45H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Ploidy, Immunolabeling, Meiosis
Document Summary
When you read a research article you have to be sure you understand the terms used. Here is a dictionary of terms relating to the research article assignment part 1. Bivalents are associations of two chromosomes during most of prophase i and metaphase i of meiosis; the two associated chromosomes are physically linked. Univalents are chromosomes that have no partner during meiosis. Immuno-labeling is a technique often used in cell biology and genetics. Antibodies are produced that recognize speicifc proteins and bind to them. The antibodies themselves are labeled so that there location in the cell can be detected. The lab most frequently used is a fluorescent molecule. Diploids are organisms that have two sets of chromosomes (one set from one parent and one set form the other parent). For example, we humans each receive one set of 23 chromosomes form our mothers and one set of 23 chromosomes from our fathers.
