HLTA02H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Ottawa Charter For Health Promotion, Victim Blaming, Salutogenesis
Document Summary
Ill health as deviation from the norm, especially a normal range of measurable biological variables: medical science held to be based on the principles of scientific neutrality, rational methods of science (values, objectivity, neutrality) Iatrogenesis is a term developed to say that medicine often causes unintended harm. It robs us of our potential to cope, resilience. Responds to the negative approach: salutogenesis emphasizes on relationships between health, stress, and coping. It should focus on what facilitates health, not causes of disease. What needs to happen is not to focus on health as an absence of disease, but rather focus on the relationship between the individual and health, stress and coping. It focuses on changing thoughts, beliefs and behaviours as well as promotes healthy living and improved coping. Idea of victim blaming: knowledge doesn"t exactly result in to change (cid:498)if you could see the germs, you"d wash your hands(cid:499) It assumes that knowledge will not translate into behavioural change.
