Forces that are beyond individual behaviours or choices greatly influence our health. The choices we are able to make are the result of social, economic, cultural, and political circumstances. The health field concept was the first to explore factors beyond the individual that impact health. It included a focus on human biology, the environment, lifestyle, and health care organization. The ottawa char- ter for health promotion sets our prerequisites for health and includes peace, shelter, food, and in- come. The population health framework was created with the goal of redistributing funds to areas most in need to promote prosperity and good health for all. The public health agency of canada is the current government organization that aims to improve health of the population and reduce health inequities. In a biomedical model, illness is seen as a result of a biological or physiological problem. In a behav- ioural approach, health and illness are viewed as results of individual behaviours or actions.
