Week 2: Determinants and Health
• A determinant of health is a factor that influences health
o Influences can be negative or positive
• Deteriats a e osidered root ause or auses of auses of health
There are different types of determinants of health including biological, behavioural,
social, physical and ecological determinants
• There are various models of determinants of health that help to conceptualize different
determinants and their relationships to each other
o The "Rainbow Model" is one of the most frequently cited models of the main
determinants of health. This model conceptualizes determinants as layers of
interacting influences.
• A cause is a factor that precedes an outcome, produces a change in the severity or
frequency of that outcome and without which the outcome would not have occurred or
been delayed in occurrence
o Biological causes refer to infection with a specific organism for infectious
diseases or pathophysiological processes for non-infectious or chronic diseases.
o A population cause affects whether individuals are exposed to a risk factor in the
first place, or if they are exposed, how susceptible they are to develop a disease.
