HLTC24 Lecture 1
-a lot of times we think of health as something we can measure
-there are some things that can’t be measured like well being
- ethical dilemma is that sometimes what’s good for health isn’t good for the environment and
what’s good for the environment isn’t good for health
- susceptibility can be genetics, can have to do with nutritional state, can affect your immune
system
- even paints can cause air pollution, new car smell is also solvents
- most important thing with water is if its contaminated
- also have chemical agents in water
- we will see an increase in west nile virus because there has been a lot of rain so more vectors
- humans are now included as part of the environment
- before we were seen different than the environment, mostly due to religious reasons
- long latency periods: sometimes you can be exposed to something, but you don’t see the effects
until much later (asbestos)
- infrequent occurrence: if the cancer doesn’t occur frequently enough than it can just be by
chance
- exposure assessment: some kind of chemical leak somewhere
- morbidity is about not feeling well, harder to determine
- dose is important because you can be exposed to something but if it’s a low dose then its not a
problem, for instance certain low doses of bacteria are not harmful
- dose is important for nutrition, too much of certain vitamins can be harmful
- after a certain point giving a higher dose does nothing, this is for drug administration
- any exposure to a carcinogen is bad
