Purpose: to introduce and compare the different types of welfare state and the role of health policy in them. Type of welfare state is related to and shaped by political values. Welfare states are being challenged, but change is slow. State/gov"t plays key role in protection and promo of econ and social wellbeing of its citizens i. e. it"s an intervention state (looks out for ppl) Provide for those who cant provide for themselves ==> give them a bit of a good life. Economy sucked ==> ppl didn"t have $, so couldn"t take care of themselves/families. Keynesian concept: gov"t spends when economy is bad ==> helps to recover since gov"t spends. Ppl said capitalist mkt was there to benefit those who are wealthy ==> business/rich ppl. Minimally happy ppl so they don"t go against gov"t. These theories group welfare states into diff categories. Residual: less well developed, smaller range of social welfare measures provided.
