Ch. 21 Current Events: Police have issued a profile of a person targeting people with mental illness; stole money and assaulted them Homosexuality in the DSM-II o Stigma of homosexuality of being a mental illness o Canada will require 2200 physicians by the year 2020 2000 physicians were over the age of 55; shortage of doctors in Canada o Government posed limitations o Students unable to become doctors in Canada Every Door is the Right Door o Aimed in integrating ppl with mental health illnesses and addictions into their communities and also integrate mental health into the healthcare system Goal to provide early intervention Ppl directed services Stronger and efficient mental health care workforce US- Senate Bill o The Mothers Act o Identifying post-partum depression in pregnant women o Problem of labelling and these plans are not devised by the women o Constant questioning of women suffering from PPD is problematic Labelling can lead to big money for a lot of pharmaceutical company 20% of the Canadian population suffer from mental health problems 2% suffer from severe mental health illnesses University of Toronto students diagnosed with Schizophrenia Fear of mental health illnesses in North America; the presence of asylums o Fear associated with being around people with mental illness Mental Illness Canada Mental illness affects almost everyone in our society.
