HLTB15H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Data Analysis, Instrumental Case, Narrative Inquiry
Document Summary
Document can be defined as a human artefact that contains information. Unsolicited documents: already exists, types; diaries of symptoms, medical records, limitations, limited by the quality of the original documents, research questions may be narrow, cannot find more, because its retrospective, we cannot find out more. Researchers using unsolicited documents need to identify where such documents are held. The resources needed by researchers who are using solicited documents specifically created for a research project will be determined by the purposes of the study and its design. Strengths of documentary research: authenticity, flexibility. Identify relationships between variables and demonstrate that they are unlikely to be a product of chance alone: diary of ms patients- look at how symptoms varied over time. Identify of similar units within the texts: put units into themes and then see how they fit in, structural analysis. Intrinsic case study is typically undertaken to learn about a unique phenomenon: researcher should define the uniqueness of the phenomenon.
