This is a five page account of Dr. Gamble and her experiences with racial
discrimination being a black female physician.
The dean of a Midwestern school had invited her to give a presentation on the
status of minority faculty, residents and students at the dean’s retreat.
She was thinking of speaking about various experiences, such as black students
being mistaken for janitors or maids and being asked to leave the eating area
since they didn’t look like physicians. She proceeded to give a clinical, dis-
passionate presentation on her observations and how the university needed to
treat the people of color better.
While there was polite clapping, no one appreciated her sentiments afterward
