Pharm. patenting came out of wto - trade related aspects of intellectual property right (trips agreement) patented more expensive than non-patented; generics are made the same way as patented, just cheaper. *pharm. industry is most regulated manufacturing industry there is (from clinical trials to patents to pricing) 2004 most common diseases: pulmonary, aids, diarrhea, tuberculosis, malaria 85% live in southern hem. yet account for only 11% of spending on world health. 1) diagnostic tools are desperately needed for adults and children; they are not available because they are not being developed. 2) e. g. aids treatment not avail. in developing world b/c they were priced out of reach.
